What to bring to a Diwali party

Diwali table set with the Jashn centerpiece and glowing diyas

Diwali is the festival of lights, and being invited into someone's home for it is a warm gesture. Here is what to bring and how to fit right in.

What to bring

  • A box of Indian sweets (mithai). The classic Diwali gift. Most cities have an Indian sweet shop.
  • Dry fruits or a box of nice chocolates. Always welcome.
  • Something that lights up. Diwali is about light, so diyas, candles or a centerpiece fit the occasion perfectly, and they last long after the sweets are gone. A pack of rechargeable diyas or the Jashn centerpiece is a host gift they will bring out every year.
  • Flowers. Marigolds and roses are traditional.

Skip alcohol unless you know the hosts drink, and avoid leather gifts.

What to wear

Dress up. If you own Indian clothes, this is the night to wear them; otherwise festive, bright colours are perfect. Expect to take your shoes off at the door.

What to say

"Happy Diwali" is perfect. You may also hear "Shubh Deepavali" or "Diwali ki shubhkamnayein". Arrive hungry, and don't be surprised if you leave with a box of sweets yourself.
